Whole-home surge protection is a single device installed at the panel that clamps voltage spikes before they reach the circuits, which is to say before they reach everything in your house that has a circuit board. Why this got more important recently
Two things changed. Houses electrified: the most expensive equipment in a Nova Scotia home increasingly runs on electricity and carries electronics that do not forgive spikes. And the grid here delivers plenty of outage-and-restore cycles, and restoration is precisely when switching surges travel.
Most surges are small and come from inside the house, from large motors starting and stopping. They rarely kill anything on day one. They shorten the life of electronics gradually, and the failures show up later, out of warranty and unexplained.
What whole-home surge protection involves
The device mounts at or beside the panel and connects across it, so every branch circuit sits behind it. Installation is short, usually paired with other panel work, and sizing follows the service and what is on it. Anything truly critical can layer a plug-in protector on top; the panel device is the one that covers what cannot be plugged into a power bar.

What it does not replace
A panel device clamps spikes. It does not condition power, ride through outages or protect against a direct strike, and it does not make a generator unnecessary where outages are the actual problem. Do power bars not already do this?
A power bar protects what is plugged into it, poorly, once. A panel-mounted device stands in front of every circuit in the house, which matters because the expensive victims of a surge are the things that are hardwired: the heat pump, the range, the EV charger.
Where do surges actually come from?
Mostly from inside: large motors like heat pumps and well pumps kicking on and off send small spikes through the house all day. The dramatic outside sources, lightning nearby or grid switching after an outage, are rarer and larger. The device handles both directions.
Is this worth it in Nova Scotia specifically?
Outage-and-restore cycles are exactly when switching surges happen, and this province has plenty of them. The more electrified the house, and heat pumps plus EV chargers are electrifying them fast, the more there is standing behind the panel to lose.
