Aluminum wiring insurance letters are how most people find out what is in their walls. A renewal arrives with a question nobody asked before, or a house sale stalls on an inspection line, and suddenly a wiring method that has sat quietly for fifty years is a problem with a deadline.
Here is what is actually going on, because the risk is real but it is also narrower than the letters make it sound.
Why houses here have it at all
From roughly 1965 to the late 1970s, copper prices pushed Canadian builders to aluminum for branch circuits, the ordinary wiring to outlets, switches and lights. Nova Scotia’s suburbs grew hard in exactly that window, which is why Lower Sackville, Cole Harbour and the postwar parts of Dartmouth hold so much of it.
Where the risk actually is
Not in the wire. Aluminum carries current perfectly well, and utilities still run it to nearly every house in the province. The problem is the connections. Aluminum expands and contracts with temperature more than copper, and it creeps under pressure, so a screw terminal tightened in 1972 can be loose by now. A loose connection makes heat, heat makes oxide, oxide makes resistance, and resistance makes more heat. Every incident traces back to a junction, a device terminal or a splice, not to a run of wire inside a wall.
That is why the standard fix is not a rewire.
What aluminum wiring insurance letters actually ask
The wording varies, but underneath it insurers generally want one of three things: evidence the connections have been remediated by a licensed electrician, usually with approved connectors at every device and splice; copper-rated devices installed where aluminum lands; or, rarely, full replacement. Most aluminum wiring insurance requirements are satisfied by a remediation letter. Some want the permit number. A few decline the risk regardless, and knowing that before renewal season is worth a phone call to your broker.
The practical advice: get your insurer’s requirement in writing before any work starts. It is far easier to do the job to their letter than to argue afterwards that what was done should count.
What remediation looks like
An electrician opens every accessible connection point on the aluminum circuits, ends each one properly with a connector rated for the job, and replaces devices that are not rated for aluminum. It is methodical rather than invasive: the walls stay closed. It often pairs naturally with a panel upgrade in houses of this age, because the service is frequently due at the same time.
The signs worth acting on before renewal
Warm cover plates, a faint plastic smell at an outlet, lights that flicker when something else switches on, or an outlet that has stopped working for no reason. Any of those in a 1970s house is worth a look this month, not at renewal. If something is actually hot or smells like burning, that is an emergency call, today.
